Obituary for Georgia Newman McCaskill

Print
“The Lord is my light and salvation,” Psalm 27

Georgia (Georgie) Newman McCaskill, age 91 of Long Branch, NJ entered eternal life on Sunday, January 12, 2020 at Jersey Shore Center in Eatontown, NJ surrounded by family and friends. Born to the late Naomi Austin Newman and Elmer Newman on January 20, 1928 in Jefferson, SC she later moved to Long Branch where she became a long-time resident.

Georgia was married for 22 years and blessed to have five children, James, Barbara, Manuel, Robin and Eric. She was the rock, the center of gravity for the family, providing spiritual guidance, prayer, and nurturing for generations of children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.

Nana, as she was affectionately known, will be remembered for her love of family. Keeping everyone together from her sibling’s right down to the great-great grandchildren. At the annual family gatherings she made heaping helpings of delicious sweet potatoes and sweet potato pie, cobblers and pound cake. She relished in the achievements of her children and grandchildren, yet remained humble in the midst of it all.

As a longtime member of Trinity A.M.E church she raised her five children in Trinity, while she served as a missionary and volunteered at the Food Pantry, often, in support of church outreach. In the Spring, Nana planted vegetables in her garden, one of her favorite things to do in retirement. She enjoyed listening to classical and spiritual music, the New York Football Giants, and crossword puzzle books as she sat in her favorite chair.

She was employed at PVC Container Corporation in Eatontown as a supervisor; Fort Monmouth, Eatontown, and The Ranney School, Tinton Falls.

Nana was predeceased in death by her parents Elmer Newman and Naomi Austin Newman; sisters, Lillie Mae Newman, Francis Crudup, and Gladys Jowers; brothers, John (A.D.) Newman, Grayland Newman, Donald Newman, Vance Newman, Caldwell Newman, and James Newman Sr.

She leaves to cherish her memory her five children, James, (Eatontown NJ), Barbara (Charles), (South River NJ), Manuel, (Union NJ), Robin, (Delran NJ), Eric (Ivette), (South River NJ); 11 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren; brother Lanzy (Etta) Newman (Atlanta) and a host of nieces, nephews and extended family members.

Visitation will be held on Monday, January 20, 2020 from 10:00 am until the time of the home going service at 11:00 am at Trinity A.M.E. Church in Long Branch with Rev. Dr. Deveraux presiding.
