Obituary for James A. Palumbo, Jr.

James A Palumbo Jr., age 72 of Oceanport, died Friday, June 7, 2019 at Riverview Medical Center. Born in Jersey City, he had lived in Long Branch before moving to Oceanport in 1983. Jim was a Construction Supervisor for the Monmouth County Building and Grounds Department, and was previously employed at DLB Associates Consulting Engineers in Eatontown for 25 years. He served his Country honorably in the US Army during the Vietnam War, was a Life Member and Past All American Commander of VFW Post 2140, Long Branch, a member of Rolling Thunder Chapter 2, Lacey, NJ, and a member of the American Rifle Association.

Jim was a parishioner of St. Dorothea’s Church in Eatontown, and a recipient of the Gift of Life Program, and was also known as the unofficial Santa for over 50 years. He loved his family to the fullest extent, always there for them, and he loved teaching his grandchildren new projects to enhance their learning… he will be sorely missed by all who knew him. He also took pride in helping the American Recreational Military Services Organization (ARMS) which provides for the Veterans and their families in times of need.

Surviving are his wife of 44 years Janis (Benjamino) Palumbo, 2 sons and daughters in law, James C and Tara Rose Palumbo, Honey Brook, Pa., Nicholas and Jennifer Palumbo, Ewing, NJ, a daughter Stacy Ann (Walter) Moreno, Gilbert, AZ, 3 brothers, Paul (Lillian), Blythewood, SC, Brian (Rebecca), Mesa, AZ, Perry (Wendy), Hudson, FL and a sister, Virginia (Fred) Sauter, Odessa, FL.. Jim is also survived by 9 grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial gathering will be held on July 10 from 3-7pm at the Damiano Funeral Home, 191 Franklin Avenue in Long Branch with Military Honors at 6:45pm. A Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, July 11 at 10am at St Dorothea’s Church followed by burial in Woodbine Cemetery, Oceanport. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Gift of Life Organization, or consider becoming an organ, tissue or blood donor. The family invites you to leave a letter of condolence, light a memorial candle or make a memorial donation by selecting the appropriatel tab.
