Obituary for Margaret Desmond-Crupi

Margaret Mary Desmond-Crupi (Maggi), 76 of Long Branch, NJ passed away on October 4th, 2019 in Los Angeles, CA.

Margaret was born in Jersey City, NJ on October 11, 1942 to Margaret and George Desmond. She spent her childhood in Jersey City where she enjoyed playing basketball and graduated from St. Aloysius High School. Margaret married John M. Peduto and had three children together: Suzanne, John, and Peggy Jo. In 1969, she and her family relocated to Long Branch, NJ, where she would live for the next 50 years. After realizing her true passion of helping others, she went on to graduate from Brookdale Community College and became a registered nurse. She worked in nursing for the rest of her life, more recently taking on private cases for the terminally ill.

Maggi enjoyed traveling, music, dancing, hosting family gatherings and summers at the beach, however, her greatest joy was helping others physically and emotionally. Maggi took great pride in making sure all her patients spent their final days in the most dignified way possible. She cared for patients as if they were her own family, and many times patients became close friends.

Maggi was the best mother, grandmother, aunt, caretaker, and friend to everyone she knew. With a personality as big as Manhattan, she always exuded confidence and class. Her glamorous style could command any room, but her generosity outweighed her beauty by far. There was never a time she did not extend her hand to someone in need. Whether it be taking care of her grandchildren when they were sick or offering a bedroom to a friend or family member who needed a place to stay, Maggi’s big heart always had vacancy. She was such a maternal source of strength she gained the nickname, “Mommy,” for so many who looked to her for guidance, comfort, advice, and sometimes a diagnosis.

Maggi was predeceased by her parents, Margaret and George Desmond, her sister, Gail Hefferan, her son, John D. Peduto, and her ex-husband, James J. Crupi. Surviving is her ex-husband John M. Peduto, her twin brothers, Robert and Gerard Desmond, her daughter and son-in-law, Suzanne and Lawrence Dilione, and her daughter, Peggy Jo Peduto. Also surviving are Maggi’s (also known as Mom-Mom) grandchildren, Lawrence and Margeaux Dilione, Anthony John Gagliardi, and Sawyer and Skylar Peduto, along with so many extended family and friends whom she held dear in her heart.

A Celebration of Life will be held in Long Branch, NJ for friends and family on Sunday, November 3, 2019. For more information email In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in her honor to Visiting Nurses Association Foundation, 23 Main Street, Suite D-1, Holmdel, NJ 07733.
