Carmen Nitsche Obituary

Carmen Dolores Nitsche (October 19, 1933 – May 14, 2020)

Carmen Dolores Nitsche, 86, died Thursday, May 14, 2020 at Community Medical Center in Tom’s River, after a hard fought battle against Covid-19.   Born and raised in Puerto Rico, she moved to Minnesota to go to graduate school in physics, and never left until after her husband of 47 years had passed away.  The two taught at the University of Puerto Rico - Rio Piedras for a year just before they started their family.  She was a fervent believe in the importance of an education and encouraged all her children to excel academically.  She loved the snow and the seasons, which were so different from her tropical birthplace. She had a lovely voice and could often be found singing as she carried out her daily tasks.

During her later years she suffered from dementia, but she remembered her daughter by sight to the end, and she remained thankful and grateful to all those who helped her throughout that ordeal.  To the very end, she brightened everyone’s day with that most beautiful smile of hers.

Carmen leaves behind her loving daughter Carmen Irma Nitsche (Steven Bachrach), dear sons Johannes Marcos Nitsche and Ludwig Carlos Nitsche, and beloved grandson Dustin Bachrach (Erin Sparck). She was predeceased by her beloved husband Johannes C.C. Nitsche, and her parents Jaime Mercado Torrens and Tomasita Delgado.  We will always remember her. May she rest in peace.

A private, virtual “Celebration of Life” will be held with close family and friends.  Her cremains will be buried next to her husband at Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis, MN.  Memorial donations may be made to Make-A-Wish (www.wishes.org), Second Harvest Heartland (2harvest.org) or Daily Work (http://daily-work.org/).
