Carol Ann Tillman was born in 1935 to the late Jacob Backhaus and Dorothy Mae Wilbur Backhaus in Elizabeth, NJ. She graduated from Battin High in Elizabeth in 1953. In 1958, she graduated from Pratt Institute with a bachelor’s degree in art education and illustration.
Upon graduation she married Raymond Tillman and they moved to Utah where their first child, Maylein Althea was born. Rohann Jenae was born while living in San Francisco, and Jason Hale was born in Beacon, New York.
She did further graduate work towards a master’s in art at Fairfield and Danbury, CT. She worked in several schools as an art teacher, mainly at Haldane Central School in Cold Springs, NY. In the late 1970’s she settled in Long Branch and volunteered at Monmouth Medical Center for 18 years.
After teaching, she concentrated on her art and exhibited her work locally. As a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church, her mission was designing and executing greeting cards for the Caring Committee.
Mrs. Tillman was predeceased by her dear daughters Maylein and Rohann; her parents, and 3 older siblings, Lester, Dorothy and Beverly. She is survived by her son Jason and two grandchildren, Aiden and Kaia, and many nieces and nephews. Carol died on November 22, 2020, she was much loved and will be sorely missed.
