Claramae "Sis" Gager Burke, a beacon of love and kindness, passed away peacefully on December 15, 2025, in Shrewsbury, NJ, at the age of 90. Born on September 15, 1935, in Long Branch, NJ, she was the daughter of the late Richard and Julia Gager and sister to the late Richard Gager. Claramae's life was a testament to her loving nature and her unwavering dedication to her family, friends, and community.
Claramae was a proud graduate of Long Branch High School, class of 1953. Following her education, she began her professional journey at Fort Monmouth as a secretary. It was there that she met the love of her life, the late Joseph I. Burke. They married and together welcomed three sons into the world: Joseph V. Burke of Toms River, NJ, Kenneth Burke (Denise) of Long Branch, NJ, and David Burke (Mary) of Centreville, MD. Claramae embraced motherhood with open arms, dedicating herself to raising her boys with love and compassion.
Once her sons were grown, Claramae returned to the workforce, embarking on a successful civil service career. She found her niche at USA CECOM Fort Monmouth as a resource management clerk, which led to her role as a program analyst in program and budget management. She retired from this fulfilling career in 1993, but not one to remain idle, she soon began working with the Armstrong Real Estate Agency in Little Silver, NJ.
Claramae's Christian faith was a cornerstone of her life, guiding her through the many seasons of joy and sorrow. Her interests and activities were a reflection of her vibrant spirit and her commitment to her community. She cherished the summers spent at the White Sands Beach Club with family and friends, creating memories that would last a lifetime.
A member of the Long Branch Public Health Nursing Association, Claramae organized various fundraising projects in support of the Well Baby Clinic in Long Branch. She was also a proud member of the West Long Branch Ski Club, where she enjoyed numerous trips and adventures. Her love for tennis was evident as she was an avid player and member of the Little Silver Tennis Club, often participating in local competitions.
The holidays held a special place in Claramae's heart, as she reveled in hosting large family gatherings and leading Christmas caroling with loved ones in a horse-drawn buggy through Oceanport. Her love for tradition and her warm, welcoming home became the backdrop for countless cherished memories.
Claramae is survived by her loving sons, Joseph, Kenneth, and David; her daughters-in-law, Denise and Mary; and her three cherished grandchildren, Connor, Ryan, and Riley. She also leaves behind many cousins and friends who will miss her dearly.
Described as loving, kind, and friendly, Claramae's legacy will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege to know her. Her radiant smile, her generous spirit, and her unwavering support were the hallmarks of a life well-lived. Claramae "Sis" Gager Burke will be profoundly missed, yet her influence will continue to inspire those she touched for generations to come.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 18, 2025 from 4-8 pm at the Damiano Funeral Home in Long Branch. Funeral Friday 9:30 am at the funeral home followed by a 10:30 am Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church of Christ the King Parish in Long Branch.
