Haywood "Hassan" Johnson, 63, of Long Branch, New Jersey, peacefully passed away on January 19, 2024, in Neptune, NJ. He was born on December 31, 1960. Haywood was a man of few words, but when he spoke, people listened and learned. A natural provider, he was incredibly overprotective of his family, especially Nanny. Despite what some may perceive as a hard life, Haywood lived on his own terms, doing whatever he wanted, however he wanted, whenever he wanted.
An honorable and loyal man, Haywood spoke his truth and called things as they were. He stood firmly behind his words, yet was humble enough to admit when he was wrong, although it was a rare occurrence. Known for his great advice, he was a man who listened to understand and provided guidance based on his wealth of life experiences. He possessed an elephantine memory, never forgetting anything, and was a teacher to all who knew him.
Haywood shared a special bond with his only child, Tashawn Haywood Corbett. They texted each other every single day, and Tashawn visited him weekly. As his only child, there was no doubt about the immense love Haywood had for Tashawn. He entered eternal rest knowing that this love was reciprocated. Tashawn loved him as much as a son could love his father, and was incredibly proud of him, even if Haywood couldn't fully comprehend that.
Now reunited with his parents, Julia Ethel Otey Wheeler and Walter Lee Johnson Sr. (Poncho), as well as his siblings Ethel Marshall, Harold Otey, Arthur Wheeler, James Wheeler, Truda Johnson, Steve Otey, Robert Wheeler, Walter Johnson, Steve Otey, and Olive Johnson, Haywood will forever be cherished in their memories.
Haywood leaves behind a legacy of love and is survived by his only biological child, Tashawn Haywood Corbett, daughter-in-law Nickya Corbett, and the mother of his son, Lynette Corbett, along with her two daughters Betty and Pauline Corbett. He is also survived by his sisters Francis Otey, Dorothy Bowles (Terry Bowles), and Donna Johnson, his ex-wife Nadine Morris, and his stepchildren LaTuya, Jenelle, James Jr., Ciara, and Robert. Additionally, he leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
In his free time, Haywood found solace in gardening and taking walks on the beach, particularly during soft rainy days. He had a passion for football, enthusiastically cheering for his favorite teams while watching the games. Hustling held a special place in his heart, he loved what he did and was exceptionally good at it.
Funeral services honoring our beloved Haywood "Hassan" will be held on Friday, January 26, 2024, beginning at 10 AM until the time of service at 11am at Damiano Funeral Home, located at 191 Franklin Avenue, Long Branch, NJ 07740. Interment will follow in White Ridge Cemetery, Eatontown. The compassionate staff at Damiano Funeral Home will be assisting the family during this difficult time.
Please join us in celebrating the life of Haywood "Hassan" Johnson, a man who lived life on his own terms and left an indelible mark on the hearts of those who knew him.
