Josephine Perri Probo, age 94, passed December 24, 2020. Josephine was born in Brooklyn and lived most of her life there before retiring almost 30 years ago and moving to New Jersey to be near her daughter and grandchildren, in fact moving right across the street. She previously taught English for 35 years at an all girls’ Catholic high school, St Edmund, where she was the English Department Supervisor and Adjunct Professor of English for college courses offered at the school. Her passion for the profession was always in evidence as she strove to be a sound Catholic role model for the numerous students who sat before her in her classroom. Her reputation for sternness and challenging her students to strive for perfection was her legacy in St. Edmund.
Although retirement was a difficult decision for Josephine, it gave her all that more time in her role as grandmother to Michael and Alexandra who were young children at the time. We all know there is no better love than a grandmother’s unconditional love, and Josephine’s devotion to her grandchildren far exceeded what most would define as a grandmother’s love. She would beam with pride at the mere mention of their names. They in turn were fortunate to have her as an integral part of their lives for so many years. She was recently blessed with a great-granddaughter, Ella Kay, born just one month ago, who she got to meet and bless.
She was predeceased by her devoted husband of 57 years, Nunzio “Pete” Probo, in 2008. Surviving are: her son, Louis Probo, and daughter, Joanne DeVito (Francis), and grandchildren Michael DeVito (Samantha) and Alexandra Laird (William) and great grand-daughter, Ella Kay, along with her sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews.
There will be no Visitation. A Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, Decemeber 30, 2020 at 11:30 am from St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Deal. Interment will follow in Woodbine Cemetery. Letters of condolence may be sent to the family by selecting the Tribute/Guestbook link above.
