Mary Gallagher Obituary

Mary S. Gallagher (née Sandberg), aged 87, passed away on March 15, 2025, in Tinton Falls, NJ. Born on November 24, 1937, in Mountain, WI, Mary devoted her life to caring for others, both as a registered nurse and a loving family member.

Mary's professional journey began after graduating from Bellin College for Nursing. She entered the United States Army in 1959, serving as a nurse until 1961. Her military tenure, though brief, was marked by the same dedication and compassion that would characterize her subsequent 50-year career in nursing, primarily in the Intensive Care Unit. Her commitment to her profession and her patients was unwavering and deeply respected by her colleagues.

Beyond her professional and military service, Mary was a cherished mother and grandmother. Mary was preceded in death by her son Kevin Kelly (wife Robin Kelly), her first husband James Joseph Kelly, and her former husband Frank Gallagher. She is survived by her children Shannon Kelly (husband George Katzenberger), Patrick Kelly (wife Barbara Kelly), Francis Gallagher, Eric Gallagher (wife Susana Gallagher), and Michael Gallagher (wife Trudy Gallagher). She was also a beloved Nana to ten grandchildren: Dana, James, Erin, Megan, Matthew, Logan, Finn, Stephanie, Samantha, and Sarah.

Mary was known for her nurturing spirit and her hobbies which included reading, sewing, and playing board games. In her retirement, she enjoyed socializing with friends and playing mahjong and rummikub. Her presence brought joy and warmth to every gathering, and her absence will be deeply felt by all who knew her.

A memorial gathering will be held at the Damiano Funeral Home, located at 191 Franklin Avenue, Long Branch on Sunday, March 23 at 1pm until  the time of service at 3pm.
