Michael John Monahan, 79, of Long Branch, NJ, passed away on September 28, 2023. He was born on September 20, 1944, in Jersey City, NJ. He was known for his love of sports; specifically The NY Giants, NY Rangers, and NY Mets; not to mention watching his children's, and eventually his grandchildren's, sporting events.
Michael is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Patricia Monahan; his daughter Bridget Monahan-Antonucci and her husband Peter Antonucci of Red Bank, NJ; his son Michael Monahan and his wife Heather Monahan of Wall, NJ; his son Brendan Monahan and his wife Holly Monahan of East Brunswick, NJ; and his grandchildren Patrick and Francesca Antonucci; Taylor Monahan; and Devan, Carter, Shaylee, and Brynley Monahan. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, in-laws that loved him dearly and his brother Kevin Monahan .
Michael was preceded in death by his father, Peter Monahan, his mother, Marion Monahan, his brothers Edward, Peter, and Robert, his sisters Eleanor, Elizabeth, Mary Jane, and Patricia, his beloved nephew Robert Glenn, sister-in-law Rosemary Hunt, and father-in-law Patrick Hunt.
Michael attended St. Nicholas Catholic School and St. Peter's Prep High School, both in Jersey City. He furthered his education at Rutgers University.
Michael proudly served in the Army from 1964 to 1966. He was a talented accountant and worked at several Clearing houses in Manhattan, in addition to several consulting firms in Boston and California.
Michael met the love of his life, Patricia, in a bar called Dudleys, where he was singing along with Joe Finn. They married a short time later on August 17, 1968. Prior to moving to Long Branch in 2019, Michael and Patricia lived in Hazlet, NJ where they raised their family and created millions of memories for over 49 years. He was known around town as "Big Mike," which was then a shared title (or warning) given to his children; "Big Mike's daughter" or "Big Mike's kid." Michael worshipped at St. Michael's Roman Catholic Parish in Long Branch. In his free time, he enjoyed playing golf, solving crossword puzzles, watching fox news and sports (often yelling at the tv), playing cards and hanging out with friends and family. Michael was known for singing the Irish rebel song, Kevin Barry, on Christmas every now and then. He was an active member of the AOH and Knights of Columbus. Michael was extremely proud of his Irish heritage.
