Rachel McHugh (nee Striglia), 88, of Oceanport, died peacefully on Wednesday August 26th surrounded by her family. Rachel was born in Newark and lived in West Orange before moving to Oceanport fifty years ago. She was a parishioner of St. Dorothea’s Roman Catholic Church in Eatontown. In 1983, Rachel and Tom were married and created a wonderful blended family. We are not only siblings, but friends as well.
She was predeceased by her son Joseph Freda in 2018. She was also predeceased by her brothers Ralph and Sam Striglia and her sisters Elizabeth Striglia, Lucy D’Aloia, and Marian Salierno. Surviving are her husband of 37 years, Thomas P. McHugh, and her children Lisa (Michael) Lapone, Mary (Robert) Cosentino, Thomas (Maria) McHugh, Lucille (Vincent) Lapone, Eileen McHugh, James (Tammy) McHugh, and daughter in law Linda Freda. She is also survived by her grandchildren Andrew (Meg) Lapone, Amanda (Kyle) Attamante, Christopher Lapone, Lynnie (Ryan) Brennan, Joseph (Kayla) Freda, Katie Cosentino, Jenna (Alex) Lautenschlaeger, Matt Cosentino, Jessica and Thomas McHugh, Philip and Abigail Lapone, Zack, Nick, and Tyler Smith, Hope and Caeden McHugh, and her great grandchildren Cara Lapone and Molly Attamante.
Rachel was a consummate homemaker, a wonderful cook and fabulous baker. Rachel was an elegant woman at all times who never left home without looking her best. She was happiest when she was entertaining her family, extended family, and friends. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren who called her Mommom, were the light of her life. All the children knew they “Could” at Mommom’s, which is part of her legacy that will live on in all of us.
Due to covid restrictions, all services are private. Memorial donations may be made to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, P.O. Box 1000, Dept. 142, Memphis, TN 38101.
