Richard Vitaliano, aged 80, passed away on July 15, 2024, in Middletown, NJ. Born in Staten Island, NY, Richard dedicated his life to serving his community and nurturing his family.
Richard's career was marked by his commitment to public safety and sports. He served as a police officer at the NYPD's 7th precinct, later transitioning to roles as the Director of Security at Wagner College and the head baseball coach there. He was selected as Coach of the Year by the NEC. He also coached baseball at Lafayette High School in Brooklyn, Manhattan Community College, John Jay College, Matawan High School, and St. John's Vianney, leaving a lasting impact on numerous young athletes.
Beyond his professional life, Richard was a passionate baseball enthusiast, a hobby that he not only enjoyed but also shared with others as a coach and mentor. He played softball well into his 70s and coached up until last year. Described as a wonderful father, husband, uncle, and brother, Richard was a man who lit up any room he entered with his charm and humor. He was deeply loved and will be missed by many.
Richard is survived by his wife, Gladys Vitaliano, daughters Nicole Vega and Erica Lobiondo, and son Richard Vitaliano. He was a cherished father-in-law to Christopher Vega and James Lobiondo, and a proud grandfather to Isabella and Sophia Vega, Cameron and James Lobiondo. His son Richard's family, Aimee and Seth, and his sister Ann Vitaliano Colangelo.
The family will receive friends at Damiano Funeral Home in Long Branch on Thursday, July 18 from 3 to 7 PM. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Cross Church in Rumson on Friday, July 19 at 10 AM.
