William Leroy Smith Obituary
William Leroy Smith, known to many as Bill, passed away on July 1, 2026, in Charlotte, North Carolina, at the age of 72 after a courageous battle with bladder cancer.
Born on July 26, 1953, in Long Branch, New Jersey, Bill lived a life marked by dedication, warmth, and steady service to others. He carried himself with a strong work ethic and a presence that made a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. His life was defined by commitment to family, faith, and the many people whose lives he touched along the way.
Bill spent his entire career at Monmouth Medical Center, where he worked as a surgical technician in the operating room. He was a dependable colleague and he earned respect through years of faithful service. His work reflected the same qualities that shaped his life outside the hospital, including responsibility, compassion, and a willingness to help wherever he was needed.
He was a devoted family man who especially enjoyed spending time with those he loved. He found joy in the simple and meaningful moments of life, whether he was gathered with family, listening to music, watching the Lakers play basketball, cheering for the Cowboys, or spending time fishing. Those who knew him best will remember his humor, his hands-on nature, and the passion he brought to everything he did.
Bill is survived by his wife, Rosa Smith; his daughters, Sherrae Smith of Asbury Park, NJ, Roslyn Hines of Sanford, FL, and Raquel Cowart of Charlotte, NC; his son, William Smith Jr. of Charlotte, NC; and his granddaughters, Rayna Hines, Reese Hines, and Arya Cowart. He is also survived by his sisters, Valerie Reeves, Beverly Williams, Gloria Smith, Linda Smith, and Brenda McCall, as well as his brothers, James “Hook” Smith, Gregory Smith, Roney Smith, and Vernon Smith. He was preceded in death by his mother, Elsie Tilghman.
Those who knew Bill will remember a man who could bring laughter into a room, fix what needed fixing, and speak with the kind of sincerity that made people feel at ease. He was funny, handy, and passionate, and those traits were evident in the way he approached both work and family life. His presence was steady, his love was genuine, and his impact was lasting.
As family and friends remember Bill Smith, they remember a life well lived and a man who gave his best to the people around him. His legacy lives on in the family he cherished, the coworkers he supported, and the many memories he leaves behind.
